Facts about the Chinese language

  • Approximately 850 millions of people speak some form of Chinese.

  • Chinese uses a logographic system in its writing which represents words or phrases. These characters can represent things, sounds or abstract concepts.

  • One-fifth of the world’s population speaks some form of Chinese as their mother tongue.

  • Mandarin Chinese is the standard language of the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong, and the Republic of China or Taiwan

  • Many researchers believe that Chinese is the oldest language of the world, there are some samples of the Chinese writing which date back from 4,000 years ago.

  • With the growing importance and influence of China's economy globally, Mandarin instruction is gaining popularity in schools in the USA, and has become an increasingly popular subject of study amongst the young in the Western world, as in the UK

  • Mandarin is a tonal language, which means the pitch or intonation in which a sound is spoken affects the meaning.

  • There are two forms: Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese. Traditional Chinese is the oldest written form, the most complex and is mostly used by Taiwan, Hong Kong and Malaysia. Simplified Chinese, on the other hand, was created about 40 years ago so that the general public could become literate. It is easier to write, less complex and most commonly used in the People's Republic of China and Singapore.

  • One major difference between Chinese concepts of language and Western concepts is that Chinese makes a sharp distinction between written language (wen) and spoken language (yu).
